Rate Limit Visualizer project cover
/ Overview

A dependency-free Python CLI that evaluates sanitized request timestamps against a fixed-window limit and visualizes usage, remaining capacity, status and reset timing.

/ Challenge

A rate-limit number alone does not show how close a client is to a fixed-window boundary, when capacity resets or whether the current usage deserves attention. Testing those states against a live provider can also create avoidable requests.

/ Provided services

Clear thinking.
Practical delivery.

01

Visible request capacity

Turns request timestamps and a documented fixed-window limit into used, remaining and utilization values.

02

Deterministic reset timing

Aligns the active window to UTC epoch boundaries and shows the exact reset timestamp and remaining seconds.

03

Honest modeling boundary

Makes no network request and does not claim to reproduce sliding-window, token-bucket or provider-specific policies.

Rate Limit Visualizer feature visual
/ Solution

Rate Limit Visualizer validates a bounded JSON array of timezone-aware timestamps, counts requests inside the active fixed window and reports usage, remaining capacity, reset timing and a compact status bar. It produces readable or JSON output and never contacts an API.

/ Impact

Fixed-window usage calculation

Healthy, warning and blocked states

Reset-boundary countdown

Timezone-aware ISO 8601 input

Readable and JSON reports

Twelve standard-library tests included

/ Tech stack

Python standard library

Argparse, dataclasses, datetime and JSON provide the dependency-free command-line workflow.

API rate limiting

Models fixed windows, bounded capacity, threshold states and reset timing without touching a live service.

Unittest

Twelve tests cover window membership, boundaries, future dates, statuses, visualization, validation and CLI JSON output.
