/ Challenge

CSV data can contain quoted commas, leading zeros, empty fields and malformed row shapes. A quick conversion that guesses types or ignores structural errors can silently change identifiers or produce unreliable JSON.

/ Provided services

Clear thinking.
Practical delivery.

01

Shape-first validation

Rejects blank or duplicate headers and any row whose field count differs from the header before serializing the result.

02

String-preserving conversion

Keeps field values exactly as text, protecting identifiers such as postal codes from accidental numeric coercion.

03

Two practical outputs

Emits an indented JSON array for review or one JSON object per line for streaming-friendly workflows.

CSV-to-JSON Converter feature visual
/ Solution

CSV-to-JSON Converter reads a UTF-8 file or standard input, validates unique nonblank headers and consistent row widths, enforces configurable row and column bounds, and outputs a JSON array or JSON Lines. It deliberately preserves every field as text instead of guessing types.

/ Impact

Quoted CSV fields handled

Leading zeros preserved

Strict header and row validation

Bounded rows and columns

JSON array and JSON Lines output

Twelve standard-library tests included

/ Tech stack

Python standard library

Csv, argparse, pathlib and JSON provide the complete dependency-free command-line workflow.

Defensive data handling

Applies UTF-8 decoding, bounded rows and columns, strict headers and consistent-width row validation.

Unittest

Twelve tests cover quoting, leading zeros, empty fields, BOM input, malformed shapes, limits and CLI behavior.
