Proxmox Capacity Calculator project cover
/ Overview

A dependency-free Python CLI that estimates identical guest capacity on one host using explicit CPU, RAM, storage and reserve assumptions.

NameProxmox Capacity Calculator

ClientIndependent daily build

IndustriesInfrastructure and reliability tooling

DateDay 047 · October 16, 2026

/ Challenge

A host may have enough storage for more guests while CPU or memory allocations become the earlier limit. A small planning tool should show the assumptions, reserves and limiting resource without presenting allocation arithmetic as measured performance.

/ Provided services

Clear thinking.
Practical delivery.

01

Resource budgets

Separates supplied host capacity, reserved resources and per-guest allocation assumptions.

02

Bottleneck analysis

Rounds each resource limit down and reports every resource tied for the smallest guest count.

03

Honest planning scope

Labels the output as an allocation estimate, with performance, HA and storage-overhead limitations documented.

Proxmox Capacity Calculator feature visual
/ Solution

Proxmox Capacity Calculator divides explicit CPU, RAM and usable-storage budgets by the allocations of one identical guest, rounds down each resource limit and takes the smallest result. It reports ties, remaining capacity and a configurable CPU allocation ratio. It does not connect to Proxmox, inspect hardware or model HA, workload performance, storage overhead or mixed-guest placement.

/ Impact

Single-host identical-guest model

Separate CPU, RAM and disk limits

Explicit RAM and disk reserves

Configurable CPU allocation ratio

Limiting-resource ties

Remaining resource budgets

Text and JSON output

Eleven standard-library tests

/ Tech stack

Python standard library

Argparse, math and JSON provide the complete dependency-free CLI.

Defensive numeric inputs

Rejects non-finite numbers, invalid reserves, non-integer CPU counts and unsupported allocation ratios.

Unittest

Eleven tests cover each resource limit, ties, headroom, reserves, numeric boundaries and CLI JSON behavior.
